Build no. 1 · pools come first

A cold plunge pool that keeps 4 °C while the air sits at 35 °C

A small built-in pool, chest-deep for one or two adults, lined in glass mosaic or stone and cooled by a chiller you never see. We size the cooling for tropical air, sun and humidity, so the water is as cold at three on a hot-season afternoon as it is at dawn in January.

Why a built-in pool and not a bathtub on the deck

A free-standing tub is fine for one person on a private terrace. A rental villa that turns over every third night, a retreat with a dawn class or a club with a queue after training asks for more: a proper edge to sit on, steps that work with wet feet, and a water volume that swallows the heat each body brings in. Volume is also what lets a chiller coast between sessions in Thai heat, which is why we start at roughly 1,100 litres. When the house really is a one-person house, look at the teak cold tub instead.

What 35 °C air does to 4 °C water

  • Pull-down. Taking one cubic metre of water from a 29 °C start to 4 °C removes about 29 kWh of heat, because water holds 4.186 kJ per kilo per degree. A correctly sized 4 HP unit does it overnight, so the plant starts the evening before a busy day and the pool is ready at breakfast.
  • Sun. A 1.2 m surface under a midday sky takes up several hundred watts. A flat teak pergola or a cantilevered roof costs less than a bigger chiller and makes the pool nicer to sit beside.
  • Air and ground. Warm air, wet coping and a shell buried in warm soil all leak heat in. The shell is insulated, the pipes are lagged with closed-cell foam and the cover seals, because a cold pipe in humid air sweats like a glass of iced tea.
  • Bodies. Every bather carries about 36 °C into the water. A hotel pool on a 16-hour day is sized for the queue after the class, not for one guest at dawn.
Lagoon-teal mosaic, wide underwater steps, a slim stainless rail and smooth stone coping on a Phuket plunge pool
Steps, rail and coping decide how the pool feels at 4 °C: wide enough to sit on, slim enough to disappear.

Round suits a villa terrace and reads as a dark mirror for the palms. Square, with a travertine edge at seat height, suits straight-lined architecture and gives a guest somewhere to sit and breathe between rounds. The shared pool is a different project: two chillers in parallel (three above 2,400 litres), a wider plant niche and a hygiene plan, described under hospitality and clubs.

Mosaic, tile or stone under a tropical sun

Surface choice comes down to glare, grip and heat. Lagoon-teal glass mosaic reads as colour in the water and stays cool underfoot. Honed travertine looks calm but has to be sealed against rain staining. Dark stone coping can burn bare feet by two in the afternoon unless the pool is shaded. We show real samples next to your layout, not renders, because glass looks different in morning light and in the white glare of April.

Where the machinery lives

The chiller sits in a ventilated plant niche or behind a teak louvre screen a few metres from the pool. Its condenser needs free air in and a clear path for the hot air out; exhaust that loops back into the intake is the commonest mistake in a hot-climate niche, so we draw the airflow before we draw the screen. At the water you see a small display on a slim stand and nothing else. The units themselves are covered in chillers for Thai heat.

Rain, leaves and the first monsoon

An open pool collects rain, frangipani flowers and palm litter. The shell has an overflow route to a drain so a storm cannot lift the water level, a skimmer takes the floating debris and a fitted cover keeps the pool clean overnight. On the Andaman coast that matters from May; on the Gulf side the heavy months arrive later, which is why the Koh Samui and Phuket pages plan the same pool on different calendars.

What it costs, and what moves the number

A round pool starts near from THB 330k and a square one with a travertine edge tops out near 370-660k, with refrigeration, filtration and basic installation inside the range. What moves it:

  • Access. A plant niche you can carry equipment into is cheaper than one that needs a crane day.
  • Distance. Every extra metre between pool and plant adds lagged pipe and heat gain.
  • Stone and mosaic. Travertine edges and hand-set mosaic cost more than tile.
  • Extras. A shade pergola, a teak deck, low-glare lighting and a cover each have their own line on the budget ranges page.
Indicative

Ranges are orientation figures at 36 THB per US dollar, with a shipping allowance and before VAT; the free 3D layout turns them into a quote. The configurator adds a sauna, extras and a chiller to the same sums.

How cold can a plunge pool get in Phuket or Bangkok?

We hold 3-5 °C within ±0.3 °C. The chiller is sized for 35 °C air, the pool is insulated and shaded, and the unit starts the evening before heavy use. A pool left in full sun with no pergola asks the chiller for more than the table assumes, so the layout tells you if shade is needed.

Can a plunge pool go on a condo podium or an upper floor?

Yes, when the structure agrees. A 1,100 litre pool carries about 1.1 tonnes of water plus the shell, so an engineer checks the slab, the waterproofing and the drain route before we promise anything. The Bangkok condo case note shows how that went in 12 m².

What does it cost to run?

A 4 HP compressor draws roughly 3 kW while it runs and cycles off when the water reaches set point. Multiply the hours it runs by your tariff; the 3D layout includes a monthly kWh estimate for your sun, shade and expected use.

Is it a swimming pool in the eyes of the authorities?

That depends on the building and the local office, and we do not guess. Ask your municipality or tambon office whether a pool this size needs a permit or only a notification, and ask your public-health office whether a hotel plunge pool follows the swimming-pool water standard. Our permit checklist lists the questions to take with you.
