Sauna and cold plunge in Chiang Mai: a cool season for the cabin and a 36.7 °C April for the pool
The north is the one place in Thailand where the sauna is a morning ritual and the plunge pool is a cooling necessity in the same year. January mornings average 15.7 °C at night, April afternoons reach 36.7 °C, and both ends change what we size: the heater for the cold, the chiller for the heat.

Three seasons, three jobs for the equipment
| Season | What the north does | What it asks of the build |
|---|---|---|
| November to February | cool and dry; January nights average 15.7 °C and January rainfall is about 11.3 mm | the cabin's best season: a heater with a cold-wind allowance; the chiller idles |
| March to May | hot and, in March, dry (about 54 percent humidity); April afternoons average 36.7 °C | the plunge pool's best season: the chiller at its hardest, shade doing half the work |
| May to October | wet; August 223.3 mm, September 207.2 mm | joinery and glass work between storms; wet works scheduled for the gaps |
Source: Thai Meteorological Department 1991-2020 normals, Chiang Mai station, 305 m: annual rain about 1,139 mm, annual mean humidity about 71.2 percent, annual mean dew point about 19.8 °C against 23-24 °C at the coastal stations. Lower dew points mean cold pipes sweat less here than on the coasts, which helps a plunge pool; record lows near 4 °C and highs near 42.5 °C come from TMD extremes compiled by Wikipedia.
The cabin in a cool morning
Heat loss from a cabin follows the difference between the inside and the outside. At a 90 °C cabin, a 16 °C January morning is about 74 degrees of difference against about 60 on a 30 °C day, roughly a quarter more heat to replace. For outdoor cabins in the north we add a cold-wind allowance to the heater and keep the glass double-glazed on the windy side. The cool-season note works the numbers.

The pool in a 36.7 °C April
April is the plunge pool's hardest month: afternoon air above 36 °C, strong sun and low humidity. We shade the pool, insulate the shell and place the chiller in a ventilated niche with a clear exhaust path. A shaded 1,100 litre pool on a 4 HP unit pulls down from tap temperature in about nine hours and then only holds the line. See chillers for Thai heat.
Who builds in the north
- Hillside lodges and boutique hotels around Mae Rim, Mae Taeng and Doi Saket: an outdoor glass cabin on a teak deck beside a hot and cold duo. See resorts and hotels.
- Villas and retreats in Hang Dong and San Kamphaeng: a cabin, a plunge pool and a yoga deck. See retreats.
- Condominiums and residences in the city. Compact rooms for committees; the condos page covers the approvals.
Chiang Mai recorded about 3.4 million foreign visitors in 2025 and 76 percent hotel occupancy (Ministry of Tourism and Sports provincial statistics, counted per province). The numbers describe the market, not a return on a sauna.
Hills, gates and the road in
Lodges sit on hillsides reached by narrow, winding roads. Kits are crated for the road, with cabin panels in sections two people can carry, glass crated separately and the plant unit lifted by hand or a small crane. We ask for photographs of the last kilometre before we plan the delivery, and for the road width at the gate.
Questions for the local office
- Which local officer handles building permits for my plot (a municipality or a tambon administrative organisation), and does a small cabin or a plunge pool need a permit or a notification?
- Are there height, setback or slope rules that affect the deck, the cabin and the plant niche?
- If the lodge takes paying guests, what changes in its licence when a sauna or plunge pool is added?
We do not state the answers; they depend on your plot and office. See the permit and paperwork overview and the deck and garden sauna page.
A lodge circuit and its range
An outdoor 4-seat glass cabin, a hot and cold duo and a teak deck sit in our estate circuit band, THB 1.1-1.9M. A smaller villa version with a 4-seat cabin and a round plunge pool is THB 700k-1.1M. Freight over the mountain road, site works and VAT are itemised. The budget ranges page breaks them down.
Is a sauna worth building in Chiang Mai if the hot season is so hot?
Yes, because the cool season is real: from November to February nights average about 16 °C at the coolest, and an outdoor cabin is a morning ritual. In the hot months the same circuit works as a short, early contrast.
Does the plunge pool need a chiller in the cool season?
It runs far less. The air takes less heat in and the water starts cooler, so the unit idles for long stretches, but a plunge pool that has to be 4 °C in April needs a chiller sized for April.
How much does an outdoor sauna cost in Chiang Mai?
A 4-seat glass cabin is THB 380-540k and a 6-seat is THB 540-770k, with the teak deck extra (THB 35-65k). Freight to the north and site works are itemised.
Can you build on a steep plot?
Yes, with the cabin on a raised ventilated base, the deck terraced to the slope and the plant niche on the uphill side. Send photographs and a contour sketch.
